After directing much of our effort to the living, dining, and bedroom spaces in a home, we must not make the mistake of neglecting the outdoor areas. Highlighting your outdoor space is a definite must in the success of completing your design or getting your home sold. We always want those who visit our projects to be fully immersed in an environment that feels comfortable and luxurious -making sure the outdoor areas are just as stunning as the inside is vital for this purpose. Here are three simple ways that you can elevate your patio, front porch, pool area, etc:

1. Furniture

Just as you would take into account the layout and architecture of your indoor spaces, you must do so outside as well. The outdoor furniture you choose to accent your serene sanctuary should work directly with its surroundings while adding comfort and style. For instance, if you have a pool, consider using lounge chairs to manifest the idea of relaxing by the water instead of just a random seating area. Sometimes you might even have a space that is open with no obvious purpose -give it one! This would be the perfect opportunity to add a seating area with functionality like side tables for drinks or a fire pit for warmth and entertainment. Also consider an outdoor dining area if you have the space. This adds to the thought of being able to really enjoy the outside as much as the inside. You want to make sure the furniture makes sense for each space and highlights its surroundings.

2. Accessories

While decorating an outdoor space will be less comprehensive than that of an indoor space, what you select to incorporate in your design will be essential in achieving a luxurious environment. You want to include items in your design that establish the space and add a texture. This will contribute greatly to the overall functionality and feeling the space provides. For example, if you have a seating area that is designed for entertainment, put a rug under there with an interesting pattern. This not only establishes that area but makes it more inviting for those who experience it. Furthermore, accessories such as lanterns, plants, and pots are very effective and go a long way in any outdoor space. You want to focus on larger accessories as you are outside and you’ll only be using one element here and there. In summary, keep it simple with the accesories but make sure they are larger in size.

3. Ambient Lighting

This last element is probably the most overlooked yet it is vital to the mood of your outdoor space -lighting. Just as you would take time to consider which light fixtures will best match your living or dining area, what you include outside as far as lighting will determine how your outdoor space feels. Recently, we've seen string lights become a huge trend and that’s because they honestly create such a warm and inviting feeling for everyone. Definitely consider string lights if you have the ability to hang them. Apart from hanging lights, there are many options for adding ambient lighting that really set the tone. Solar powered globes for example are a great way to add some soft lighting to warm up the area at night. Another great way to create a moody and luxurious vibe would be to have a fire element feature. Whether it be a set of torches, candles in lanterns, or a firepit, fire has a way of adding light that is naturally calming and aesthetically pleasing.
