There are many ways one can end up focusing too much on the design aspect of a space without considering the functionality and comfort. For us, as an interior design firm that focuses on staging, we always want to take into account how comfortable, warm and inviting a space feels. Whether it be a living area, dining area, or bedroom, we want those who enter the space to have a sense of tranquility and ease.

This puts those who may be interested in the home in the picture. They may imagine themselves lounging on the sofa or reading a book in the armchair, for example. Keeping that goal in mind, you also want to create a space that features elevated design to impress those visiting the home of course. To accomplish this, we’ve come up with a quick list of ways you can have your cake and eat it too. Beautiful design and luxurious comfort!

  1. Variety of textures

When establishing a feeling of comfort, one must consider what type of textures are present in the room and if they are too repetitive or not present enough. Including a multitude of textures in one space will directly affect people’s perceived sense of touch. For example, incorporating textures that are smooth will bring a more sleek tone to the room while incorporating more rough textures add intimacy. Having the correct balance of textures is vital to the overall vibe of the space. Again, you want to evoke the right emotions with what you include in your design.

2. Lighting

Producing a sophisticated environment calls for the use of unique and modern light fixtures. One cannot rely solely on the builder quality features used in most new construction homes for lighting. It is much more than just a tool for functionality. Light pieces whether it be a chandelier, sconce, floor lamp, or table lamp add a vital amount of personality and visual weight to a space. You will find that through lighting, you acquire the ability to incorporate style and comfort.  Having a very unique floor lamp in the corner of a bedroom, for example, gives you the opportunity to add that sophistication yet bring warmth and functionality.

3. Use of Natural Accessories

Last but not least -accessorization. After you’ve incorporated your textures in the furnishings and added style with the lighting, you will find adding in natural accessories that demonstrate a certain lifestyle will establish an inviting yet sophisticated environment. Natural accessories are decorative objects that enhance the space stylistically but possess a function to emulate a more organic living space. Decorative objects like key bowls, vases, books, sculptures, and bookends are some great options that will suggest the idea that this space is a comfortable living environment despite the high end nature of the design.
