Is Black Really The New Black In Interior Design?

Let’s take a dive into interior design’s noir trend. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or just simply do not follow design trends, you would have noticed a recent influx in the color black being incorporated in many new design projects. Whether it be furniture, accents, or built-ins, black has been more apparent in modern interior design than ever before. Remember your grandma’s black toilet and sink? Yeah, it’s totally hip now.

Black Furniture

Amidst this moody invasion that we’re absolute fans of, many furniture manufacturers have contributed to the wave in the best way. We are seeing many new pieces of furniture that embrace this trend and you should too! From entire sofas and sectionals to dining tables and dining chairs, black is making its comeback and we are here for it! There is something about incorporating these moody tones into modern and contemporary spaces that completely elevates the atmosphere. Take a look at this CB2 sofa -with as neutral surroundings as the piece has, it adds a certain drama that we feel the space was needing. Would this space still look good with a lighter tone sofa? Sure but the statement this charcoal velvet sofa makes is almost breathtaking.

Black Accents

There are so many options available when it comes to what will live in your home. Of course for many, something less moody would work better and this is understandable in certain situations but there are plenty of ways you can incorporate black into light spaces. It doesn’t have to be a substantial piece in the room. For instance, you can use an black accent chair that ties in another texture or fabric in the room for the slightest touch of moody modernism. Black art pieces, accent tables, cabinets, and wall decor are also a great option when everything else in the space might be on the lighter side. Check out the gorgeous Estevez console sold by Neiman Marcus in the photo below. This image is a great example of what we mentioned about how not everything in your space has to be dark and moody to include furniture and accent pieces that have more of that dusky feeling.

Black Architecture

Now that we’ve discussed how black furniture and accents can enhance your space, let’s take a look at how black is being introduced to the ever-so-altering world of interior architecture. Bold colors are definitely making their way back into kitchens, bathrooms, and living rooms but black is the one to watch for. There is a lot of inspiration out there for how you can transform a space using built-ins, wall paneling, and much more. One of our favorite projects, Mid Century Modern Gem, is the perfect example of why you should consider black built-ins and interior architecture. If you look at the photo below, you’ll witness a beautiful black marble waterfall counter feature in this kitchen accompanied by these amazing contemporary barstools in black.

While some people may think it is a bit too “bold” or “outlandish”, we are welcoming black back into the interior design realm with open arms. Is black really the new black? Well, that’s completely up to you but this trend is definitely taking over and we expect to see this much more in many popular design channels.
